Darius hadde jobbet på byggeplassen på Ensjø i sju måneder. Han var tømrer fra Kaunas i Litauen, og han var ansatt i et lite bemanningsfirma som leide ut arbeidsfolk til store byggeprosjekter i Oslo. Hver måned sendte han det meste av lønna hjem til kona Inga og dattera på ti år, som trengte tannregulering. Han klaget aldri, verken på kulda, på de lange dagene eller på brakka han delte med tre andre menn.
