Darius hadde jobbet på byggeplassen på Ensjø i sju måneder. Han var tømrer fra Kaunas i Litauen, og han var ansatt i et lite bemanningsfirma som leide ut arbeidsfolk til store byggeprosjekter i Oslo. Hver måned sendte han det meste av lønna hjem til kona Inga og dattera på ti år, som trengte tannregulering.
