Solrun hadde vært jordmor i trettitre år, og hun hadde lært at babyer aldri tar hensyn til værmeldingen. Hun jobbet på fødestua i Gravdal, men hun bodde i Reine, nesten helt ytterst i Lofoten. Den februarnatta lå hun i senga og hørte vinden kaste snø mot veggene, da telefonen ringte litt over elleve.
